Schmuddelwetter = Museumsbesuch: viele Blickwinkel, wenig Striche:-)
"With plenty of precipitation and high speed gusts of wind, a great opportunity presented itself to meet the Munich sketchers in one of our many museums (along with 7,000 others:-)
Without watercolours in hand, I felt challenged to draw "with as-few-lines-as-possible".
As many viewpoints as possible, the fewest lines do-able:-)"

"I like this, something as whimsical and oddball (and functional!) as a ship on the elevated railroad tracks in Sendling, converted into a collection of Cafés and eateries. Walking up the steps on the stern side, the view on the deck reminded me of a boat trip I took in July on Lake Starnberg. Until I looked past the people and was confronted with the many construction cranes on the city skyline."
"Below deck, familiar seaman's cozy surroundings. 'Til you look out the window: city buses, train cars on tracks, concrete residential buildings, cranes :-) "

"For the time being in Munich, the weather provides us with great incentive to head to the museums
(wet and grey) :-)
This time, to try something new, I grabbed my B4 pencil (which I haven't for a long, long time).
What an adventure! :-) "

"The café is a great setting for stories, from newspapers or directly from the storyteller."

With Eduardo Bajzek in Cologne
After the Barcelona Symposium, Eduardo Bajzek from Sao Paulo passed by Cologne, so Arno and I, we had the idea to spend a day sketching together.
We met in front of the cathedral and because Eduardo already sketched it in the morning, we left the place and took a walk around the city centre. As we were all architects, we had to go to Peter Zumthor's Kolumba museum. Here's Eduardo's, Arno's and my drawing of it:
Eduardo carried his brown Staedtler felt-tip during his day in Cologne.

Have a look at Arno's fantastic handling on volumes.

I tried to draw it the technique I learnt from Eduardo's workshop in Barcelona: straight to masses, only with markers.
We walked to one of Cologne's remaining city gates, the Hahnentor.

The last drawing we did was by the river Rhine, drawing the old romanesque church Great St. Martin.

Eduardo and me at work:

I have also done a litte video documentation of the day:
It was an amazingly intense day and ended up in a typical Cologne Restaurant with some beers! Thanks Eduardo for passing by!

Alte Oper Frankfurt

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Ziemlich alte Ente!

Comeback in Siegen
I have moved again!
After finishing my master thesis in Munich, I have moved to Siegen in order to take a job as an assistant professor at a university where I once did my diploma, years ago. I've also grown up in this region.

Siegen is a small city (about 100,000 inhabitants) in the east of Cologne and in the north of Frankfurt. It is affected by rural, hilly landscapes, but also has strong regional characteristics like slang, food or the instustrial sector. The residential architecture of the drawing above is typical for Siegen (mostly from the 19th century), but somehow the contemporary architects of Siegen are not aware of this tradition.
I took several walks around the streets of my apartment - for the physical and sketching habituation! And I found a building in which design I was once involved when I was a student (bottom right). Today, it was quite warm outside, so I decided to do a video of me drawing a car. Unfortunately, the battery was low when I wanted to start watercolouring. Check it out:
